From the President

Over the course of the last month, several good things have happened in ASGRA-Land. Allow me to share them with you.

December 7th was the Annual "Courtney Lovelace Christmas for Children" benefit at Freddie's Beach Bar and Restaurant. Proceeds from this benefit were split between Grandma's House and ASGRA. With the assistance of the cast and guests of Freddie's Follies, a total of $1,368 was raised. Each organization received $684.

December 13th was our annual general membership meeting where we elected new board officers and approved the 2009 budget for the association. We received a total of 32 ballots. I am pleased to announce that Beth Brockelman received 31 votes and is our new Vice President and Matt Komornik received 30 votes and is our new Trustee. Thank you both for stepping up to serve ASGRA in these positions. The budget as presented to the membership received 29 "Yes" votes, 1 "No" vote and 2 members that did not vote at all on the budget. The result is an approved budget.

December 21st saw the return of the "Brandy Dover Christmas for Children" benefit at Remington's. Proceeds from this benefit were split between Grandma's House and ASGRA. With the assistance of the cast and guests of Grand Illusions 2.0, a total of $823 was raised. Each organization received $411.50.

Last but not least, December 27th was the "Hard Candy" benefit (hosted by Stormy Starfyr) at Be Bar. Stormy and her cast of queens and sexy underwear models raised $322 for ASGRA. In total, $2,513 was raised during the month of December, of which ASGRA received $1,417.50.

I want to extend a special thank you to all the former ASGRA Royalty members that stepped up to help with the December benefits (in alphabetical order): Xavier Bottoms, Beth Brockelman, Destiny B. Childs, Esmeralda Kane Jaymes, Jymmye Jaymes and Blair Michaels. Also the casts and guests of Freddie's Follies and Grand Illusions 2.0. Special thanks to Stormy Starfyr, and the staff and management of Freddie's Beach Bar and Restaurant, Remington's and Be Bar.

Keep an eye on the web page for future fundraising events in the coming months, as well as events just for fun.

REMEMBER: ASGRA is your association. The future of ASGRA depends on the support of its members.

Mike S.
ASGRA President

ASGRA Vagabond Chuckwagon

Tired of the same old events? Looking for an alternative to your usual Friday night routine? How about a fun and relaxing dinner with some of your ASGRA friends once a month just to meet some new folks, catch up with old friends and try out some of the DC metro area's multi-cultural restaurants?

Come join ASGRA's Vagabond Chuckwagon - a roaming monthly dinner for all interested ASGRA members and their friends/partners. The location will rotate throughout different restaurants in the Washington metro area between DC, Maryland and Virginia. Lonni La Bel will be your organizer and hostess.

We will begin our 2009 dining adventure at 7pm on Friday, January 16, 2009 at DC's own Banana Café and Piano Bar, located at 500 8th Street, SE (http://www.bananacafedc.com/home.htm). The restaurant is conveniently located a short walk from the Eastern Market metro stop and there is ample street parking as well. Banana Café has an upstairs piano bar, so you can plan to ramble upstairs after dinner or mosey down the street a few blocks for some country dancing at Remington's. At this first dinner we'll discuss other possible locations to meet and eat throughout 2009, so bring along your ideas for great dining places to explore in Maryland and Virginia as well as DC.

Since most places fill up pretty quickly on a Friday night in DC, and Banana Café only accepts reservations for parties of 6 or more, we'll need to have an idea of how many people plan to join us. Please contact Lonni by Monday January 12 for more info and to let her know if you plan to attend. You can email her at or call 703-371-7865.

Buckaroo Man
Dave Stamey,
Album: Buckaroo Man

Buckaroo is slang for cowboy
Bed role is a cowboy's sleeping bag
No-see-ums are very small insects known for biting
Galvanized tank refers to tanks that hold water for the cattle
Caballo is Spanish for horse
Choya refers to the Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus
Jug-headed pony is a horse that is either ugly or disliked
Hollow-backed could refer to sway-back, a horse who's back is not straight.

Sleep in a bed role of canvas
No-see-ums feed on your ears
Wind blows the dust just like buckshot
And I ain't never seen it rain much out here
Smell your own sweat in the evenin'
Wash up at the galvanized tank
Nearst town forty miles
The cook here he don't smile
And all these young horses are rank

But come a ty yi yipee I O, on the back of my Caballo
I whoppy tie one on when I can
My spurs they don't ring much, I never did sing much
But I'm sure enough, a Buckaroo Man

Cold fingers stiff in the mornin'
By noon it's a hundred and three
Five year old slicks in the canyon
And never a hint of a breeze
Jug-headed hollow-back ponies
Provide all with hours of grief
There's snakes in the shade
Choya on the grade
And a half a ton of grit between my teeth

But come a ty yi yipee I O, on the back of my Caballo
I whoppy tie one on when I can
My spurs they don't ring much, I never did sing much
But I'm sure enough, a Buckaroo Man

But come a ty yi yipee I O, on the back of my Caballo
I whoppy tie one on when I can
My spurs they don't ring much, I never did sing much
But I'm sure enough, a Buckaroo Man

I said come a ty yi yipee I O, on the back of my Caballo
I whoppy tie one on when I can
My spurs they don't ring much, I never did sing much
But I'm sure enough, a Buckaroo Man

... a Buckaroo Man
