JezzieBell Bottoms

Hard to believe that a year has already come and gone, and what a busy and fulfilling one. I came into the ASGRA family not only for the excitement of being part of a rodeo association, but my "family" is also a part of it. It was a connection that we all had together; something to do as a family. As a matter of fact, JezzieBell was born as an ASGRA function. I was there to see my sister, Destiny, win her first ASGRA crown, and to also see her blow the socks off of the IGRA world.

Being a member of the royalty team meant a lot to me. Not only was I able to go out and help raise money for some really well deserved charitable associations, but I was privileged to reign with my loving husband (and biggest supporter) Big Daddy. We didn't get to travel as much as we wanted, but we out did ourselves when we did get out and about. Pride was a big part of our reign, and with that 4 different Pride celebrations all over the east coast.

With my give up come much fulfillment, and sadness. I am fulfilled because of all the money that we raised to help the many associations that need it (SMYAL, Metro Teen Aids, and the YES Institute). I am sad to see the year end, but will walk away with the knowledge that a little time and hard work, you can accomplish anything.

I want to thank a few people for making this year so successful. Jackie, our loving VP and liaison who pulled out all of the stops to make everything that we wanted to happen, happen. Patrick for helping promote and just being there when we needed you. Mike and our ASGRA board, for being a huge support. To my sister, Destiny, for showing me the way, and being a building board for helping JezzieBell be more prepared for the expectations needed of me as a royalty member. To my loving husband, and best friend; Big Daddy…without you, this year would have been just another year gone by.

I say goodbye with a smile in my heart and hope that all incoming royalty have as great of a reign as I did. Thank you ASGRA for giving me this chance, and LET's RODEO!!!

Kisses and much Love,
JezzieBell Bottoms

ASGRA Elections

Elections meeting for 2007 is being held on October 28. Location will be posted under the Announcements section on our main page. This year we will be electing a President, Treasurer and Trustee. The first two positions are two year terms, and the Trustee election is to fill the remaining year of my three year term. The current Trustee position is being held by Mike Benner. We hope to see you all at the meeting.

Sincerely,
Lonni
Elections Chair Person

Thank you from PR Chairman Patrick.

It takes a lot of work not only to put on the rodeo, but also to make sure that people know about it. There are posters, palm cards, business cards to create; there are bodies needed to distribute them; there are emails, press releases to send and press to talk to; there are prides, bar nights and other events to attend. All of this is much more than one man or woman can do. Luckily, this year we had numerous men and women to help us out and I wish to recognize them and thank them.

Starting us off right for the year were the folks who helped to come up with the design of the promotional materials that would become our graphic for the rodeo for the year. PR would not mean a thing if you don't have promotional materials to hand out. We had some excellent folks to work their magic in this department. Donnie W. and Ron Crognale had their hands in the creation of what would be the graphic for our poster. JR Key did the layout of our program. Both items received many positive compliments from folks and the effort to make our materials so polished is much appreciated.

Mr. ASGRA 2007, Big Daddy; Ms. ASGRA, Jezzi Bel Bottoms and our Vice President, Jackie Thompson were more than a PR Chair could ask for in being a great presence. All three of them worked their butts off to organize and man bar nights around town; attend various Prides including the New York City Pride Parade and the Gay and Lesbian Exposition in New York City in late March. Their presence helped to put ASGRA out in front and help to bring the cowboy/girl presence to places where ASGRA had a vested interest in getting our name known.

At the New York City Pride Parade, Jezzi, Daddy and Jackie marched the 4 miles along with other ASGRA members: Darla Horn, Mitch Horn, Lance Haverly and others; handing out materials to get folks aware not only of rodeo, but specifically, ASGRA rodeo. A special thanks to Lance Haverly for being our NYC contact at the meetings and for the offering of his vehicle for the parade.

Hitting NYC for the first time for the Gay and Lesbian Exposition in March, Daddy, Jezzi and Jackie helped to work the Gay Rodeo booth at the Javitts Center for 8 hours on Saturday and 7 hours on Sunday. Of course, they were not the only Gay Rodeo Association who was in attendance at the Exposition. We had Bob from Central Canada, Robert C. from Colorado, and a whole batch of folks from the Liberty Gay Rodeo Association out of Philadelphia: Jen V., Ernie, Jeff and others. Plus Brian Helander, President of IGRA, was there as well. This gave us a 16 member strong presence and that number of folks is needed to do the work at the Expo.

Beyond the larger events like the Exposition and NY Pride, we were a number of other events this year. We were part of the exhibits and vendors at the 2nd Annual Leather Pride here in DC. Beth Brokleman and Mike S. both get a tip of the hat from me for being there to help represent ASGRA for that event.

We also had a few folks who were behind the scenes to help out PR in various ways. David Jurhen did an excellent job of coordinating the advertising for newspaper outlets. Phillip Skopp and Linda Santi both were helpful PR elves who did some research on pin vendors, upcoming dates of area prides and other events.

And of course there are those that may not have had their complete hand in PR, but had left a finger print or two here and there helping to promote ASGRA along the way: Matt Komornik, Jymmye James, Jon H., Esmeralda Kane James, Mike Benner and Frank Harrell just to name a few.

The list of folks who have helped promote ASGRA and rodeo could get pretty long and I know that I may have forgotten mention of a few other names, but those of you who have put your hard work into making PR happen know that I appreciate very much you being there at many events tied to ASGRA's name and helping to represent us and the cowboy/girl way of life. Hauling promo items to and fro; talking up the rodeo and be a friendly face to greet a stranger are no small task. Without all of that we'd just be another acronym of letters in the long list of organizations and clubs that exist. You all help to make it real. Thank you very much from every part of this cowboy's heart.

ASGRA History In Review

From the November 1991 Newsletter
Editors note: Rita Roughstock wrote a continuing column in Thirteen Spurs between 1991 and about 1996. As far as I have been able to determine, the true identity of Rita was never revealed, so apparently only the author and maybe the newsletter editor knew who actually wrote these articles. Rita! If you're out there, care to come out of the closet now and take credit?

News from Rita Roughstock
Out in Wichita, the lovely Miss Kaddie Blackwell, more formally known as Miss New Mexico, was seen dancing ever so closeley with our own Kerry Richard. My that man gets around - - and his Steven slavin' away in the arena dust all unawares. Speakin' of the dusty arena-side, did you see the s____ Mike Lentz got into? Had to have help from Ms.Linn Copeland, Arena Director herself, who kindly gave him a shower -- or, rather, gave his foot a shower.

And as if our illustrious president wasn't in enough of a stink already, ask him what was going on behind the horse trailer - - somethin' about someone with no pants and Mike with dirty knees. Gracious me! Remember, I don't gossip, so you didn't hear it from me. But I will say that old Bull would be a bit huffy if he saw his two heifers, or should I say Dairy Queens, in action back of the horse trailer doing something to David H. I saw them checking him over very carefully like David might be their new... And David what would you want with those old heifers anyway? Do tell us all about that delicious looking red-headed, freckle-faced cowboy from Oklahoma! Did you actaully get to see what a rodeo was all about? Somone as busy as you?

It's that time of the month so I must put this to bed...and whatever y'all heard about yours truly and that hunk of a bull rider, just t'ain't so - - at least not all of it!

Great American Cowboy

By Jack Hannah, sung by The Sons of the San Joaquin
Album: From Whence Came the Cowboy

For a limited time, Cowboy Frank is providing a stream to listen to this great song as sung by its author. Listen while you read. (should play on any player)

  • "Pulling calfs" refers to getting small calfs out of deep snow drifts
  • Woolies = long underwear made of wool
  • Doggie = a young calf
  • Chinch is the strap that goes around the horse's belly to hold the saddle in place.
  • Chopping ice, this is neccessary to free up water for the cattle, who could not get to water under the ice.
  • Stetson is a brand of hat famous for western styles
  • "Daddy of 'em all" is slang for a rodeo
  • Wild galoot refers to a bucking bronco
  • "Rolling his own". Depending on your interpretation of the song, this could refer to how the bronco rider must rock forward and back to keep in time with the bronc to stay on its back for 8 seconds to qualify for the prize, or could refer to rolling his own cigarette

Well, he's up at the crack of dawn, puttin' thoes big boots on
Pullin' thoes calves in the snow has left him tired
There's tension in the air as he thinks of the critters out there
The grazin' gone, the winter has hit 'em hard!

Cowboy, great American Cowboy -
Big high boots, Steston hat, and a lether vest
Cowboy, Great Amereican Cowboy -
With a hoss and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!

Well, he's up at the crack of dawn, puttin' thoes woolies on
The wind's so cold the chills are runnin' down his back
The cattle range is froze, and every little dogie knows
He's an angel of mercy mounted on a horse's back

Cowboy, great American Cowboy -
Big high boots, Steston hat, and a lether vest
Cowboy, Great Amereican Cowboy -
With a hoss and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!

Well, he's up at the crack of dawn, cinchin' that saddle on...
Stormin' hard and things are lookin'g mighty grim
There's a long ride ahead that day choppin' ice and a-feedin' hay
'Cause he knows every critter's life depends on him!

Cowboy, great American Cowboy -
Big high boots, Steston hat, and a lether vest
Cowboy, Great Amereican Cowboy -
With a hoss and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!

Well, he's up at the crack of dawn, puttin' that bacon on...
Winter is past and the skies are clear and blue
There's springtime everywhere, and the doggies are a-frolikin' there...
And he's thankin' the Lord once more for a-seein' 'em through

Cowboy, great American Cowboy -
Big high boots, Steston hat, and a lether vest
Cowboy, Great Amereican Cowboy -
With a hoss and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!

Well he's up at the crack of dawn puttin' that Stetson on...
Headin' for the "Daddy Of 'Em All" to celebrate
Well, he busts out of that chute, ridin' that wild galoot
Smilin' and a-rolin' his own as he counts to eight!

Cowboy, great American Cowboy -
Big high boots, Steston hat, and a lether vest
Cowboy, Great Amereican Cowboy -
With a hoss and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!

With a hos and a rope and a gun, he tamed the West!
