The Big Daddy Report:

Hi Ya'll Big Daddy here your Mr. ASGRA 2007. I wanted to keep you updated on current Royalty events around the area. Last month we had a great dyke night at the DC Eagle on the 24th. About a hundred people showed up and partied with us. We competed for best shot Annie Oakley style which brought great attention and of course one can't complain about the jello shooters and the 1$ drafts all night. In all it was a wonderful night full of lots of fun. I also appeared at the Miss Freddie's pageant in Crystal City and had a great time meeting northern Virginians. What a wonderful pageant full of great performers and talent.

This month you can catch us at the DC Eagle on the 9th celebrating Valentines Day in a very special way. Come on out and have fun with us. Jello shooters and 1$ drafts will be there all night and so will I. If you haven't come out and met me please do. There are so many wonderful members within our organization whom I haven't had the opportunity to meet. I'd love to see you there. Don't forget it's Friday the 9th of February. While I have the time I would love to congratulate Destiny B. Childs a former two time Miss ASGRA for bringing back the IGRA crown to the East Coast and winning the title of Miss IGRA 2007. It's great to have a member of ASGRA hold one of the highest titles in IGRA, so hats off to Destiny! That's all for now, till next time keep chutin. Big Daddy.

Ask Big Daddy:

Dear Big Daddy,
I always see you around and I wanted to know why you wear all those pins and things on your sash. Where do you get them from and why do you wear them? No offense, they look great! I just wanted to know why they are there?
Thanks, Sheila Thompson

Sheila,
No offense taken, it's a great question. Many people don't understand why Royalty wears the things they do on their sashes. You see Sheila, a sash will start off with nothing on it when you receive it and then by the end of your reign you will or should have the whole thing covered from front to back with pins, brooches etc. The reason this happens with me in particular is because everything I do as Mr. ASGRA I try to get a pin to remember that occasion and I or someone else puts it on my sash. It's a great way for me to remember the things that I have done during my reign or a pin/brooch might also be remembered as a personal memory.

This past September when I got sashed as your Mr. ASGRA, I remember each of my friends putting a pin on my sash to celebrate that day. It's almost like I take their spirit with me wherever I go and in everything I do. There is also the time when I helped in a Mautner Project benefit for breast cancer and I brought a pin and stuck it on my sash just to remember that benefit and how Mr. ASGRA was there helping to raise money for a good cause. Regardless of the event each pin, brooch, or picture means something and it keeps me motivated to want to do more and eventually cover the whole sash. I hope that answers your question.
Keep 'Chutin', Big Daddy (MR. ASGRA 2007)

ASGRA Volunteers Honored

January 28th came windy chilly and cold, but inside the Union Pub, it was all warm smiles and comforting camaraderie at the ASGRA Volunteer Awards Ceremony. Volunteers snacked on finger foods that consisted of meatballs, spring rolls, BBQ chicken and chicken tenders at the Massachusetts Avenue venue as ASGRA honored them for their work in helping to make another successful year for ASGRA. As Patrick Hunter, PR Chairman for ASGRA said "without you as volunteers, there would be no rodeo, no prides, rodeo schools, trail rides or any of the other many events that you help to put on. We are a success as an association because of you."

Each of the volunteers was given a certificate of appreciation and a dreamcatcher for "helping to make our dreams come true. "Beth Brockleman, Volunteer Coordinator, assisted in the distribution of awards and honors. Beth was also honored by the association with the outstanding volunteer buckle for being someone who in the words of Mike Sanders "Is willing to drop everything and help you when you call." Sandy Lee was awarded her own Assistant Chute Coordinator Shirt by Chute Coordinator Matt Komornick. Sandy had stepped up to the position at the request of Matt last minute and was unable to get an official shirt during rodeo time.

The highest Honors of the evening went to two persons who are staples of the ASGRA association. Golden Lariat Awards were given to Lonni La Bel and David Hehr. Both Lonni and David have served in numerous capacities as volunteers in the association over the years. Most notably, Lonni La Bel has been Trustee, a former Ms. ASGRA, a countless supporter and volunteer for any number of fundraising events and the editor of the Newsletter for over half a decade. David Hehr is a founding member of ASGRA, has served as its President, Rodeo Director and Security Coordinator; often putting in long hours at the rodeo grounds to ensure that everyone enjoys the party - sometimes missing a huge chunk of it himself.

The conclusion of the evening came when a special dreamcatcher was given to Libby, manager of the Union Pub. As Patrick Hunter, who received the Billy Collison Memorial Volunteer Buckle during the evening, told her as she stood shyly by him. "Your staff was wonderful, the food was terrific and you have made this a dream come true for us."
