From the President

Howdy,

What a wild, strange year it's been. 2006 brought us many challenges, and we came thru them all.

We had either Trustee or Alternate Trustee representation at all but a few rodeos this year, we were well represented at all IGRA Board meetings, as well as IGRA Convention, University and Finals. We went thru a change of leadership on the board of directors. With the assistance of many volunteers, we held a very successful rodeo in September. And now we ride forward into 2007.

I am pleased to announce the appointment/election of the following board members:

Vice President: Jackie Thompson;
Secretary: Frank Harrell;
Corresponding Secretary: Beth Brockelman;
Social " Entertainment - Jymmye Jaymes (aka James Young)
Membership - Jon Hoehn
BHT Representative: Beth Brockelman

They will be joining our current board members Ivan Cuadrado (Treasurer), Lonni LaBel (IGRA Trustee), Patrick Hunter (Public Relations) and myself in making sure our organization is run efficiently and continues to be a success both locally and on the International rodeo circuit.

Recently at the IGRA Finals Rodeo in Reno, NV, "Team ASGRA" put up a good show (see the results section posted elsewhere in this newsletter). Our own Destiny B. Childs brings home the title of Miss IGRA 2007!!! Two years in a row ASGRA Royalty has brought this title back to the East Coast. In the 12 years that we have sent members of our Royalty to Finals, they have come home with 10 IGRA Royalty Team positions. ASGRA Royalty is becoming a force to be reckoned with. (No pressure JP and JezzieBell…really)

Be sure to keep an eye on the Award-Winning ASGRA web page for all things ASGRA and Atlantic Stampede 2007.

ASGRA President

Dolly Madison Rebuild

As reported in the last 13 spurs newsletter, a lot of the equipment for the Dolly Madison race was put to rest. After many years of use, wear and tear took their toll on the "Potomac River" from the Dolly Madison Race. This section of the race was a platform on wheels that ran across a straight track.

We are looking to rebuild this section of the Dolly Madison Race and are asking for your help. What we are looking for is ideas for a new "Potomac River" as well as help in bringing it to life. We are looking for something that would be lightweight and easily stored from one year to the next. Anyone who has ideas for the new "Potomac River" for our Dolly Madison Race or anyone who has building skills is asked to contact , 202-352-2356.

Howdy folks

ASGRA is looking for Volunteers to serve on our Bylaws Committee. The Board of Directors has appointed me as the chairperson of the Bylaws Committee. And soon we will have two Volunteers from the Board. Now we need additional Volunteers from general membership so that we have an ASGRA-wide participation. Bylaws and Standing Rules for ASGRA have existed for years. Our job will be to review them, and recommend changes, where necessary, to keep them current with our present organization.

We are looking for assistance in two areas.

  1. Volunteers to serve on the Bylaws Committee who will review the Bylaws presently in place, and recommend changes to the general membership.

  2. General membership participation by bringing those changes to the Bylaws Committee that you deem necessary. Current Bylaws can be found on ASGRA's web-site. See this section of the Bylaws for the procedure for submitting recommended changes.
Thanks for considering joining our Bylaws Committee. We look forward to your thoughts and participation in this important task.

Tom
Bylaws Chair

Fifteen years ago I went to the inaugural Atlantic Stampede Rodeo. Somehow, I wound up competing in the Wild Drag Race with two cowboys from Arizona. As I quickly found out there was money and trophy buckles awarded to the winners. I was hooked and my rodeo adventure began. Since then I have been proud to wear my ASGRA shirt to over 70 rodeo's. I have won 5 All Around Titles, won dozens of buckles and have set records across the country. Winning the All Around at this years Stampede was my farewell and thank you to ASGRA for treating me so well over the years. I had promised to compete for ASGRA until the end of this rodeo season and I held true to that promise.

I want to thank each and every one of you for giving me a home for so long. I have been surrounded by amazing cowboys and cowgirls who I am proud to call friend. I will always be a member of ASGRA and it is my goal to have our two rodeo associations work together to make the eastern seaboard a powerhouse within IGRA.

In Reno I will enter the rodeo grounds once last time for ASGRA. For the first time in years I am going to be competing in 4 events; calf roping on foot, chute doggin, steer deco and Wild Drag. I hope to shine for ASGRA, for Liberty and for all of our members. Thank you one and all.

Chicken Corn Soup serves 6

Ingredients

Chicken Corn Soup 6 tablespoons butter or rendered chicken fat
¼ cup finely chopped onion]
1 cup finely chopped celery
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups Homemade Chicken Broth
1 lb can cream style corn
¾ cup milk
¾ cup half-and-half
2 tablespoons shredded carrot
1 tablespoon finely minced fresh parsley
¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg, rounded
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 ½ cups very coarsely shredded cooked chicken

In a large saucepan, cook the butter, onion, and celery over medium heat for 3 minutes.
Stir in the flour, and cook 5 to 6 minutes longer, or until the mixture is golden.
Add the broth, and whisk until smooth, raising the heat a bit. Add the remaining ingredients except chicken, and then lower heat and simmer for three minutes.
Add chicken just before serving--allow soup to stand a few minutes to heat the chicken pieces.

The cook on a cattle drive was often nicknamed "Coosie," an Americanization of the Spanish word cocinero meaning cook. He was generally renowned for a bad temper and his total control of the cooking area. More about the Coosie

ASGRA History In Review

Thirteen Spurs Newsletter, November 1992

September sloshing... 'er, riding?

We sat in the parking lot at Piscataway Stables, watching the rain through our windshields. We showed up for the September monthly trail ride hoping that somehow it would not be raining beyond the beltway. Two members had driven down from Philadelphia. Sure we were all looking forward to riding, but did we want to ride that badly?

Seven of us eventually talked ourselves into going despite the rain, and we had a blast! The sound and smell of the woods in the rain was enchanting. For at least two participants, this was their first horseback ride since childhood. Even the horses seemed to enjoy themselves.

Several ASGRA members had opted to stay dry by practicing roping in the barn. After the ride, Bill D. gave patient instruction to several more would be ropers. Jim M. demonstrated promise, hitting the mark on his first throw!

Bill then led a tour of the Prince George's Equestrian Center (site of the Atlantic Stampede '92). We marveled at the rodeo arena now under construction. A contingent of happy (if damp) riders concluded the day with dinner at Wild Oats.

Back to the present
Note from the Newsletter Editor: The ASGRA trail rides are still held first Sunday of every month.

A couple of years ago four of us showed up at Piscataway stables on a snowy February Sunday morning to find no horses assembled for us to ride. When we finally rounded up Nick and Joey, they apologized saying they didn't think anyone would show up with all the snow coming down. "Oh, we forgot, this mess doesn't bother you guys, you're REAL cowboys." Now that was some statement. We were the first paying customers they had since the January ASGRA trail ride.

See you this coming Sunday at Piscataway, rain or shine.
