The ASGRA Newsletter is Your Newsletter.

Because of the change in format, due dates and calendar coding, we will still accept additions to this issue of the newsletter through Monday, July 31. We can do that now because of the electronic nature of the newsletter. But next month we go to a deadline of the last Monday of each month.

Articles come from you, our members. Without your input, there would be no newsletter. We are looking for articles covering anything to do with rodeo, Royalty, or the country western lifestyle.

Have you been to or competed in a rodeo? Let us know what you did, if you won any ribbons or buckles, how did other ASGRA members do, how much fun did you have? What problems did you see? Did you attend any of our fund raising or Royalty events? How did the entertainment go? Did you go on the ASGRA trail ride this month? Who fell off? Who did something funny? Let us know with a short article.

The deadline for our September newsletter is August 28. Send me your articles,

Make sure you check out our calendar for this month's events.

Frank Harrell
Webmaster, Secretary, Newsletter editor, and general all around old fart...

From the President

Greetings ASGRA,

Atlantic Stampede is just a few short weeks away. Are you ready for it?

Tickets are now on sale for this year's Rodeo and dances!!!!!

We have a lot of things planned for you this year. We of course have our famous dances Friday and Saturday nights at the Hyatt Regency, our host hotel. The Royalty contest will also take place Friday night. Come out and watch as the contestants compete to be your representatives for the next year on the rodeo circuit.

In addition to all the great entertainment and dancing, we have two great days of rodeo events, the reason we gather in September. Come out and watch the cowgirls and cowboys from all over the country compete in 13 IGRA sanctioned events, plus our very own Dolly Madison Race.

Our annual elections will take place on Sunday September 10th. Be sure to cast your vote for Vice President and Secretary, to make your voice heard. See lower down in our newsletter for current candidates.

We have a couple of other positions open. Those are for a Bylaws Chairperson and a representative to Brother Help Thyself (BHT). Our Bylaws Chairperson chairs one of the most important committees we have as an organization. The bylaws are the rules by which we operate. If you are interested in serving as the Chairperson or a committee member, I invite you to read the requirements for the committee. Our representative to BHT serves as a valuable member of our community at large. If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact me at .

Respectfully,

Mike S.
ASGRA President

Looking to Become More Involved with ASGRA?

Here are two ways to do just that:

  1. Want to better understand how the rodeo rules from IGRA are created and updated? Interested in networking and learning more about IGRA and its member associations in general? You can read about some of the plans for Convention and find hotel/registration information at http://www.smra.net/convention.asp. For more information and to submit your name for consideration contact ASGRA Trustee Lonni La Bel at .

  2. IGRA Finals Rodeo is the place where the next IGRA Royalty Team is chosen. There are 5 categories of judging...Personal Interview, where the contestants show their knowledge of IGRA history and rules; Horsemanship, where they show their skill on horseback; Entertainment; Western Wear and Public Presentation (or On Stage Question).

ASGRA has 3 judging positions available this year. Those are Personal Interview, Horsemanship and Public Presentation/Western Wear.

Candidates for ASGRA Office

Vice President

I, Jackie Thompson, am seeking election to the ASGRA Office of Vice President.

What experience do you bring to this position?
I have been acting Vice President since July 2006. I bring a passion to make ASGRA the best association there is. To that end, I've established a series of bar nights in places that ASGRA might not have been exposed to before. I'd like to have ASGRA back on the bar rotation in a number of places that ASGRA hasn't been to in recent years. I've also started an email group to publicize ASGRA bar night events around town as well as on the ASGRA website.

Personally, I have been successfully running my own business for the past 3 years and have recently added a second business that has grown out of my hobby of leather working. In my day job, I have excelled with a can-do attitude. Whatever needs to be done, let's do it and get it done! I'm excellent at crisis problem solving, creative thinking, and gotten along with varied personalities and all walks of life

What do you expect to accomplish in this position? Please be concrete.
I have long wanted ASGRA to have more of a presence outside of just a bar or two in DC. I want people to know that there is a gay rodeo association and yes, Washington, DC does have one too! I'd like to cultivate the lesbian community, letting them know that ASGRA exists and yes, Virginia, there are cowgirls too! I'd like ASGRA and its royalty to also do more community outreach to youth groups and other charities in the area.

How do you expect to interact with the rest of the Board?
I respect and honor each opinion given. That's not to say that we will always agree, but we all have ASGRA and your best interests at the heart of any matter. That is what you have entrusted us to do by voting us into office and I can not and will not do less than my best.

How do you expect to interact with the general membership?
Openly and honestly is how I interact with everyone. If you want to talk to me, I'll be ready to listen to your opinion or concern. I'm only as effective in my job as my fellow members allow me to be. If I don't know what you're thinking or are concerned about, how can I expect to do what's in your best interest? So tell me what you're thinking; I need and want your opinions! I'd like our members to be more involved with the community at large and if you already are, let me know how ASGRA as an organization could help.

What is your vision for ASGRA and for the position you are a candidate for?
In the Vice President's role, I'd like to see more community events and partnering with other organizations. Specifically, I'm currently in talks with Whitman Walker's Lesbian Services Program to try and do more outreach within that community. I'd also like to work more with and teach the GLBQT youth about the country western lifestyle.

I want ASGRA to be known in the community as an organization that stands behind its word and one in which individuals and organizations can depend on. I'd like to see ASGRA grow in its membership as well as its outreach within the local community and expand deeper in our territory, especially in Maryland and Virginia; places that have recognized GLBQT communities. I want ASGRA to remain a viable and vital part of the country western lifestyle in the Metro Washington, DC area.

Respectfully submitted,
Jackie Thompson

Secretary

I, Frank Harrell, am seeking election to the ASGRA Office of secretary.

What experience do you bring to this position?
I would like to thank you for the privilege of serving ASGRA for the past four years as your Secretary and the past five as Webmaster. During this time I have missed only 2 board meetings. Your support, thoughts and suggestions have been very helpful in the way I served. I wish to continue in these roles.

What do you expect to accomplish in this position?
There has recently been substantial change in the ASGRA Board’s composition, and I would like to assist by providing some degree of continuity. I am continuing the process of getting historic documentation into a software form and posting relevant information on the website for members and the Board as needed. I would greatly like to continue with this process. We need to preserve our heritage, before it is lost.

How do you expect to interact with the rest of the Board?
Now more than ever, our board needs stability and I believe I can offer that assistance during this period of transition.

How do you expect to interact with the general membership?
I will interact with the general membership as directed by the Board, and as related to the duties and functions of the office of Secretary. As we transition further into the world of digital information, being both Secretary and Webmaster I can continue to offer this unique combination of record keeper and information dispersal to the board and association in general.

What is your vision for ASGRA and for the position you are a candidate for?
ASGRA has needed new blood for some time. We are currently seeing many new faces around the board table. I see ASGRA progressing into the last half of our second decade with a renewed interest in accomplishing the association’s goal of fostering the country western lifestyle. As Secretary I believe I can offer a continuance of understanding on how the association functions, bringing the knowledge of the last few years as a guiding influence. Respectfully submitted,
Frank Harrell

ASGRA History In Review

ASGRA Newsletters
Your secretary was recently handed a bin of papers which our dear departed Billy Collison left us. Upon investigation, I found the bin contained a treasure trove of historic documents that Billy was putting together as an archive. Amongst other things, the papers included a complete set of newsletters from the early days of ASGRA, which I had previously been unable to obtain.

I am currently in the process of scanning these old newsletters and putting them on the ASGRA website. Our apologies for the large size of the page images. In attempting to find a reasonable trade off between several hundred megs of PDF files, something that will actually fit within our available web space, and images that are large enough to read, I chose large jpg files. Any smaller and you wouldn't be able to make out the writing. High resolution PDF versions are available upon request.

From time to time, I will extract articles from some of the newsletters and make them available within this "History In Review" section.

So here is our first installment, dedicated to our dear friend, Billy Collison.

ASGRA Newsletter,
October 1991

(Before it was called Thirteen Spurs)
Photo on the right is from that first trail ride.

On a balmy late summer Sunday afternoon (September 1st), many ASGRA members joined with the Capitol Riding Club for a trail ride at Piscataway Riding Stables. More than a third of the ASGRA membership, including a majority of the officers of the organization, rode into the wooded hills and along the trails together. Hoots and hooplas could be heard back at the barns. The group rode off into the woods and soon became a series of smaller groups crossing each other's trails and smiling and riding off to cross another group of riders.

This was a day for the books as the breezes coolly skipped through the branches of the wooded trails, Horse whinnies, the members' whinnies, and the clamoring of horse's hooves could be heard throughout the afternoon. As we started for the woods from the stables you would have thought a posse had been formed to catch the Hole-in-the-wall gang and the dust of their horses would have convinced you. But, alas, it was 36 fun loving ASGRA and Capitol Riding Club members enjoying a day that you should have been with us to see and experience. For far too short a time on this beautiful day we rode up and down hills and across creeks, past cattle pastures, along dirt roads and out over cleared land on some of the friendliest horses you will ever find, even for the least experienced riders.

As we reached the woods from the barns, at least one rider was so excited he flew into the woods without his horse. There were no injuries {well, perhaps pride was bent a little), and a smile was seen across the face of the flying cowboy. No doubt he will be there again on the first Sunday of October.

Our monthly rides are jointly sponsored by the Capitol Riding Club and ASGRA. Groups from CRC and other individuals will doubtless ride on many weekends as long as the weather allows. So should you decide to go riding, you will likely find a group of amiable fellas and gals meeting at the Stables. These more serious horse riding enthusiasts certainly welcome you to join in these excursions, even though they are not so-called 'ASGRA sanctioned events'.

As a newly formed recreational group, we enjoy adding new friends to our activities. The camaraderie of our group seems to be warmly spreading like the welcome sunrise on a blue-sky day. If you are a member, isn't this one of the reasons you joined? lf you hear of something happening often, find out if you can join in. Unless it is a "romantic" interlude, the answer is likely to be yes.

Then again, if you have a heavy hankering to get involved in some rodeo group activity join a committee. This writer is sure you will find several activities where your help is really needed. Don't sit home with nothing to do. Get involved in the work and play of ASGRA!!!

Back to the Present

ASGRA trail rides are still held on the first Sunday of each month. See our trail ride page for details.
