WANTED: Hard Working, Committed People

Howdy folks!

In the business of the Atlantic Stampede rodeo, it is usually much later in the year when we begin our search for volunteers from within our ranks. But in the business of running the day-to-day operations of the Atlantic States Gay Rodeo Association, it takes yearlong volunteers to serve as Committee Chairs. November 1st is the beginning of our year and all Chair positions become available at that time.

We are searching for individuals to fill the following Committee Chair positions:
Fundraising and Sponsorship
Membership
Public Relations
Rodeo Events and Training
Social and Entertainment

Please read the ASGRA Bylaws (found on the website under the Membership link) to see what each position entails.

At Atlantic Stampede, we had three positions that were up for election. We elected a new President and IGRA Trustee. I would like to welcome Gaither to a third term as ASGRA's president and Lonni LaBel as our trustee to IGRA. Both have a long history of committed service to this organization and I have no doubt that they will continue that tradition.

No one was nominated for the Treasurer position; therefore we are in need of a qualified individual to take that over. The requirements are also listed in the Bylaws.

At the October Board of Directors meeting, Rob Larew was nominated and approved to serve as our Bylaws Chair for this year. Rob is looking for people to serve on this committee. The Bylaws committee consists of the Chairman and four (4) other people, two (2) from the Board of Directors and two (2) from the general membership.

If you are interested in any of these positions, contact Gaither Pennington at pres@asgra.org for more information and to set up a meeting. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Mike S., ASGRA Vice President

IGRA Royalty 2006 Contest

The IGRA Rodeo Finals were held in Dallas, TX in mid-November. In addition to the arena events, the IGRA Royalty Competition is also held during Finals weekend. This year we had one contestant compete in that contest, Jymmye Jaymes, Miss ASGRA 2005.

In total there were 11 contestants, representing 6 IGRA Member Associations. Competition includes Western Wear, Public Presentation, Horsemanship, Entertainment and the "dreaded" Personal Interview. To enter this competition takes determination, patience, nerves of steel, talent and a little bit of insanity. Many a time I've heard the contestants exclaim, "What have I gotten myself into??"

To place on the IGRA Royalty team, contestants must make at least 75% of the total possible score (with the high and low scores thrown out). "Choo-Choo"* had me more than a little worried before the competition on how well she would do in the Interview portion, but by the end of competition, all was good.

Since our inception, ASGRA Royalty has come home with the following IGRA Royalty Titles: Ms. Joanne Bawiec (1994) Mr. 2nd Runner Up Daniel Lusk (1999) Ms. 2nd Runner Up Cindy Brendle (1999) Ms. Lonni LaBel (2000) Mr. Daniel Lusk (2000) Miss 1st Runner Up Patty Como (2000) Mr. 1st Runner Up Sonny Koerner (2001) Miss 1st Runner Up Destiny B. Childs (2005)

As the Royalty Liasion to the Board of Directors, it is my honor to add Jymmye Jaymes to the ranks of ASGRA Royalty that have gone on to win a position on the IGRA Royalty Teams.

Congratulations to Jymmye and the rest of the 2006 IGRA Royalty Team: Mr. IGRA Steve Wollert (GSGRA), Mr. IGRA 1st Runner Up Gary Rushton (AGRA), Mr. IGRA 2nd Runner Up Rich Valdez (CGRA); Ms. IGRA Kimberley Kay (CGRA), Ms. IGRA 1st Runner Up Annie Budd (TGRA), Miss IGRA 1st Runner Up Rebecca Tucker (CGRA) and to complete the team…………Miss IGRA 2006 Jymmye Jaymes!!

* (Next time you see Jymmye, be sure to ask her about Choo-Choo.)

Hey Baby, Let's Go To Vegas!!

Mark your calendars now for IGRA University in Las Vegas February 17-19, 2006! A completely re-vamped curriculum has been developed and new instructors will be presenting a variety of courses designed to help rodeo and royalty contestants and IGRA member associations to improve their knowledge and skills. Check out the IGRA website for information and updates!

The 2005 Royalty team would like to congratulate Miss Destiny B. Childs on receiving the prestigious Divine Mick Award. Miss Divine Mick was a very reliable person; she was always everywhere she was asked to be and went above and beyond the call of duty. No matter the time or place, she would be there to lend both her talent as an entertainer or her immense dedication to charitable causes. Miss Destiny has continuously represented these attributes during her reign as Miss ASGRA 2004 and as Miss IGRA 2005 1st Runner Up.

Get (W)rapped!!! Miss IGRA 2006 will join the ASGRA 2006 Royalty team for a gift wrap fundraising event at Freddie's Beach Bar in Arlington, VA on Saturday December 10 from 12-4pm and on Sunday December 11 from 3-7pm. There is no charge for the gift wrapping, but donations will be accepted and will go to the teams' various charities. Take a break from your shopping, have a bite to eat and a beverage and get your presents ready for the tree!

On November 20th, the 2006 ASGRA Royalty team and Miss IGRA 2006 performed at the annual Rhinestone Review benefit for Brother Help Thyself. Over $8000 was raised for BHT and the organizations they support. This year's benefit was in honor and memory of Billy Collison, a long time active ASGRA and BHT member.
