The President's Update…

Guys and Gals:
As the summer heats up, so do our preparations for Atlantic Stampede 2002! The Rodeo Roundtable, under the guidance of Rodeo Director Mike Lentz, and Assistant Rodeo Directors Paul McCaffrey, Billy Collison and JR Key, continues to make steady progress laying the foundation for a great rodeo weekend. I'd like to especially thank those who have answered our call for volunteers. Special thanks go to Diane Mejia who will serve as our Assistant Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers should hear from Diane or Billy in the very near future. We're still looking for folks though, and I'd encourage anyone who can donate time to sign up using the new Volunteer link on the ASGRA website. While I'm speaking of volunteers, I'm happy to welcome Glen Hayataka again as our Hospitality Coordinator. Glen and his group provide an invaluable range of courtesy services at the hotel for our members and guests during rodeo weekend.

Stampede weekend heralds the close of one rodeo year and the beginning of another. It also means that our annual election of Officers and Committee Chairs is not far off. We need enthusiastic and committed candidates for the positions of Vice President, Secretary and Committee Chairs. You may remember that in last year's election, we lacked candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Social and Entertainment Chair, and Public Relations Chair. The accomplishment of this year's rodeo is a tribute to those Board members who rolled up sleeves to do more than their position's requirements and to Scott Smiley, Beth Brockelman, JR Key, Mark Baker, and Patrick Hunter who stepped forward as Treasurer, Secretary and Assistant Rodeo Director for Entertainment, Rodeo Site Entertainment Coordinator and Public Relations Coordinator, respectively.

We continue to be blessed by the generous donation of time from our many volunteers-member and non-members alike. Every moment volunteered is sincerely appreciated and each one makes a difference. But to make the most of this gift, we need a vacancy-free Board of men and women who are committed to the growth and improvement of the Association. Won't you please consider service in one of these important positions? In the weeks before the formal call for nominations, I urge each of you to consider the gift of service on the Board. I encourage you to visit the website to review the duties and responsibilities for each position. Think about it, and then please step forward with the gift of your skill, talents and time. Both you and the Association will be better for it.
Gaither Pennington, President

The Membership Corner

Well, it's August and almost time for Atlantic Stampede 2002, which means several things:

  • We need volunteers to help with various aspects of putting on the rodeo. If you can help out, contact Billy Collison (his contact info is located in the newsletter).
  • Your membership is due for renewal. If you have not renewed yet, you can contact me via email, phone or regular mail. If you have access to the Internet, you can either print off the form or renew online with your credit card (MasterCard, Visa or Amex only). Just follow the Membership link from the ASGRA web page. For those of you that are contestants, you MUST be a member of one of the IGRA member associations in order to compete.
Don't forget to tell your friends, family members and everyone else you know about Stampede. It's a fun-filled weekend of dancing, entertainment and most important… the rodeo events themselves. Where else in the Mid-Atlantic region can you spend an entire weekend cruising good-looking cowboys and cowgirls?

I would like to welcome Carol's Western Wear back among our ranks as a Business Member. (Carol's offers a 10% discount to card-carrying ASGRA Members.) Stop by one of their stores in Glen Burnie or Laurel to see the newest in cowboy/cowgirl duds. And don't forget to stop by their booth in the vendor tent during Stampede.

And lastly, I am your liaison to the board of directors. If you have a concern or question, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to get you an answer or get the situation corrected. I'm here for you and your needs as members of this association.
Mike S., Membership Chair

So you wanna be a Rodeo Star?

Ever wonder exactly how to 'dog' a steer? Or if roping a calf is as easy as some cowboys make it look? Or exactly what it feels like to blow out of a chute on top of an irritable steer or bull?

Well, ASGRA's new stock contractor for 2002 is running a training session on the weekend of August 10-11 to teach you the basics and let you get a little practice in before Stampede 2002. Classic Rodeo Productions (Carl Leach) from York Springs, PA is our Stock Contractor for Atlantic Stampede 2002. Carl has the facilities to conduct a rodeo school at the York Springs Equestrian Center on his property.

The plan is to focus on training for Steer and Bull Riding as well as Chute Dogging, Calf Roping and possibly some Horse events as well, if there is enough interest. Each event will be limited to 10-12 students. York Springs is @ 1½ hours from the Rockville/Gaithersburg area. Details are available on the website. Interested? Contact RE&T Chair Matt Komornik at
