The President's Update…
Guys and Gals!
With summer officially started, I hope that you're planning to kick back and relax a bit. The Board and Rodeo Roundtable are busy at work and preparations for Atlantic Stampede 2002 are moving forward. Accomplishments since our last chat:
  • Paul McCaffrey, Billy Collison, and JR Key have joined the Stampede 2002 team as Assistant Rodeo Directors for Arena, Grounds and Entertainment, respectively. JR Key will be assisted by Mark Baker, who will handle entertainment at the rodeo site.
  • Stampede 2002 has a new Stock Contractor-Classic Rodeo of York Springs, Pennsylvania. A Rough Stock School is planned for August-details to follow!
  • All Stampede 2002 positions for certified Officials are filled-assistant positions are in process.
  • Delegates and Alternates for IGRA Convention have been selected. Convention will be in Cleveland, Ohio, July 25-28.
  • Entertainment planning for Stampede 2002 has begun-starting with a mail-out of invitations to perform.
  • Detailed planning with the Capital Hilton has begun. We're happy to say that room reservations for September are already rolling in. Reserve your room before August 11th to get the best rate!
  • The Rodeo Roundtable, under Mike Lentz's guidance, will implement a new layout and arena grooming plan to address the concerns of some of our horse competitors last year. ASGRA is committed to providing the best competitive environment for our events and working hard to address past concerns.
  • We've had a great response to our Volunteer mailing but we're still looking for a few good men and women. To volunteer your time, please visit the website.
Although I'm confident that you've penciled in the dates for Stampede 2002, please be an ambassador for us to your friends and neighbors. Spread the word - the only place to be in DC on September 6, 7 & 8 will be at the Rodeo! Thanks!

Gaither Pennington, President
We see things not as they are, but as we are.
The Membership Corner
Howdy!
Just a few items this month. Thank you to everyone that came out to our annual Bylaws meeting. We all know meetings aren't always fun, especially on our day off. So your willingness to come out was greatly appreciated.

Membership renewals are due this month. We've made it a little easier this year by putting the form online. No stamp required, provided you know your member number and have a credit card. There is also a printable form if you choose to pay by check or money order. Please do not send cash thru the mail. CONTESTANTS…YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF ONE OF THE IGRA ASSOCIATIONS TO COMPETE. I send a list of eligible contestants to IGRA every month and your name will come off the ASGRA list if I have not received your renewal by July 31st.

Last, the July membership meeting is scheduled for Sunday July 21st at 4:00 PM at Sheridan's. Mark your calendar.

That's it from me. Don't forget Stampede 2002 September 6-8. Get your tickets early and save $$.

Calling all Aspiring Roughstock Contestants!
Are you looking for training to prepare you to compete at Atlantic Stampede? Well, we have selected our stock contractor and he can run a training session for us on the weekend of August 10-11. ASGRA has selected Classic Rodeo Productions (Carl Leach) from York Springs, PA as our Stock Contractor for Atlantic Stampede 2002. Carl has the facilities to conduct a rodeo school at the York Springs Equestrian Center on his property. The plan is to focus on training for Steer and Bull Riding as well as Chute Dogging, but we will consider adding Calf Roping and possibly some Horse events as well, if there is enough interest. Each event will be limited to 10-12 students. York Springs is @ 1½ hours from the Rockville/Gaithersburg area. Details are being finalized now and should be available on the website soon. We need a confirmation of interest by July 15 in order to lock in the date with the contractor and to publicize the travel/housing arrangements and costs. If you are interested in attending, please contact R&T Training Chair Matt Komornik at komornikm@syncor.com.

ASGRA's Web World
Howdy cowboys and cowgirls!
Lots of things have been happening on our web site over the last couple of months:

In the Membership section of the site, you can now renew your membership online using your credit card. You can also update your mailing or e-mail address or phone number online. Both of these items can save you a lot of effort, the hassle of filling out the paper forms and the expense (37 cents beginning in July) of mailing it in.
http://asgra.org/membership/membership.htm

The proposed By-Laws changes can be viewed in the By-Laws section of the site. I hope as many of you as possible attended the Bylaws meeting at Sheridan's on June 23, or at least mailed in your absentee ballots. By the time you read this, we should be preparing to load up the revised ASGRA bylaws based on the results of our discussions at that meeting.
http://asgra.org/membership/by-laws.htm

We have a new gallery of events from SEGRA's Southern Spurs Rodeo 2002. Included are photos of ASGRA members who attended and competed in that rodeo. A Real Player video and description is available of their new event, the Scarlett O'Hara Race, which is patterned after our Dolly Madison Race. Watch as our own Ms. ASGRA 2002, Beth Brockelman, plays the part of Scarlett and is rescued from the burning Tara.

The ASGRA online store is up and running. Order ASGRA T-shirts, pins and mugs online using your credit card. You can also order memorabilia T-shirts from the 2000 and 2001 Stampede rodeo seasons. In a few weeks we will be adding several pins from those rodeos, too. As a member, you can order name badges and ASGRA red shirts as well.

The Atlantic Stampede section now shows the schedule of events for Stampede weekend. We have an explanation of how prize monies are divided up. There is a page listing our rodeo vendors, which will be updated as spaces are taken. Buckle sponsorships are also being listed as they are sold.
http://asgra.org/stampede/index.htm

In the next few days we should have the art work for the rodeo and that will be incorporated into the Stampede section of the site. We hope to be able to provide a copy of the striking poster for this year's Stampede that you can download and print. So if you haven't visited our web site lately, there is lots to see and do there! Take the time to check it out!

Stampede 2002 Marketing Opportunities
During the course of Stampede weekend, over 2,000 people come to one or more of our events. They come to watch the events in the arena or to enjoy at least one of the dances. Every person that walks through our gates is handed a program. What better way to get the word out that your business is up and running?

Consider placing an ad in our Stampede 2002 program book or having a table in our Vendor Tent. It's a great way to help your business grow and let those who read our book know that you support not only the GLBT community, but also the rodeo and country western communities.

The ASGRA Web page has all the information you could possibly want about sponsoring a buckle, setting up a vendor table and advertising your company during Stampede 2002. I invite you to show your support for both the rodeo and the community in one (or more) of these ways. Package deals are available. Check it out on the web at http://asgra.org or contact me at Join@asgra.org for more details.
