At that year's final is Dallas, NGRA and IGRA officials were treated to an advance screening of a controversial new movie called Brokeback Mountain. We were all deeply touched by the moving portrayal of two closet cowboys in the 50's. Many of us could relate.
When I returned to Las Vegas I called Focus Features, the film's promoters, and was able to arrange a pre-opening party to be hosted by NGRA at Charlie's - Las Vegas, which rodeo legend and bar owner John King had recently opened.
The studio sent us a lot of logo merchandise and an over-sized movie poster signed by Ang Lee and the cast.
We auctioned that for over $1000.
