The Colorado Gay Rodeo Association (CGRA) is proud to honor John Nelms as Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo's Grand Marshal for 2009.
If you have ever visited Charlie's - Denver then you are almost certain to know this man, as he welcomes everyone with open arms who comes through the door. John has been a loyal supporter of Gay Rodeo and a past All-Around Cowboy on the rodeo circuit. Born and raised in Bakersfield, California, John quickly found his true home here in Denver and has created a loving family in the gay community, which he has called his home for over 30 years.
John started working at Charlie's in the mid 80s and over the years became incredibly close friends with the late Wayne Jakino during Gay Rodeo's humble beginnings. It is because of their relationship that John remains a strong advocate of the organization today, both locally and internationally. As the General Manager of Charlie's- Denver, John has led and worked with many members of the community, and has mentored and fostered the growth of countless cowboys and cowgirls over the years. His appreciation of the country lifestyle is undisputed and alive in him every day.
It is because of John's unwavering commitment and dedicated service to Gay Rodeo that CGRA's selection of him as this year's Grand Marshal was an easy decision. He has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for various GLBT beneficiaries, but it is Gay Rodeo he holds most near and dear to his heart. He has hosted countless benefits for CGRA at Charlie's and is always willing to go that extra mile to ensure that each and every event is a success. Without the support and commitment of individuals like John Nelms, the landscape of Gay Rodeo wouldn't be what it is today.
For all of us who know John, we would agree that he has a big heart- full of love, Iaugher, and a willingness to help.
. . . and it is because of John Nelms and everything he has done for our association, that we are eternally grateful, honored and thrilled to call him CGRA's 2009 Grand Marshal.
Hats off to John Nelms! Thank you for all that you do!
