Fritz Capone, AKA Jim Freeman, but everyone knows Jim as Fritz, was born in Louisiana, where he grew up. Later in life moved to Oklahoma City, and finally over 20 years ago, moved to Wichita, Kansas.
Back in 1985, Fritz, known for his spur of the moment brainstorms, entered a pageant in Oklahoma City. He invited Linn Copeland, the Fantasy I South Fortyowner, to go with him to the pageant. He mentioned that she should go with him as this pageant had something to do with gay rodeo. Fritz entered, and successfully won the title of Miss OGRA (Oklahoma Gay Rodeo Association). In this first year Fritz also went on to become the very first Miss IGRA in 1986. It was this first visit to Oklahoma City that gave birth to the thought between Fritz and Linn Copeland that maybe Kansas could have a gay rodeo association also.
During Fritz's reign as Miss IGRA, he was seen throughout the country attending many if not all the rodeos in the circuit. When he was not performing his duties as IGRA Royalty, Fritz, on occasion could be seen working in the rodeo arena in full drag. Through the years, Fritz has had the honor of putting many "butch lesbians", including both IGRA past presidents, in full drag for various fund raising events. He has also been responsible for "grand mothering" many well-know queens to "star" status, which includes two past Miss IGRA's.
Fritz epitomizes the concept of "TEAM" work. He has always been one of gay rodeo's greatest ambassadors. Anyone who has the pleasure of meeting Fritz, whether it's at the Fantasy I South Forty where he is show director and bar manager, or at one of the many fund raisers he participates in or holds, will at some point end up in a conversation about gay rodeo. He always encourages everyone he meets to become a participant in all aspects of gay rodeo.
It is IGRA's great fortune to have Fritz Capone as our 2002 IGRA Finals Grand Marshal.
