The N.M.G.R.A., rodeo staff, volunteers, and supporters are honored to have Mr. John King as the first GRAND MARSHAL of the ZIA REGIONAL RODEO.
John's interest in rodeo begin as a youth growing up in Colorado Springs. Soon after, he helped lay the foundation for the growing country and western spirit by opening "Charlie's" in Denver. Attending his first gay rodeo in Reno, Nevada, in 1982, john took the experience home with him to Colorado and helped to form the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association.
From Colorado, John moved to Phoenix and opened a second "Charlie's." Having served on the board of C.G.R.A., his expertise soon landed him the coveted Trustee position of A.G.R.A., a position he has held since 1986. Soon after the formation of A.G.R.A., he became, and continues to be, the rodeo director for the Road Runner Regional Rodeo held each year in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, he has now directed two of the I.G.R.A. finals rodeos.
Despite his demanding roles in A.G.R.A., and serving on several AIDS related boards in Phoenix, John gave his expertise and time to the growing N.M.G.R.A. by encouraging New Mexico to co-host the Phoenix Rodeo, (now the Road Runner Regional Rodeo) New Mexicans were given first hand experience in rodeo production. In many ways, the rodeo you experience this weekend is a result of John King. Please take the time to join us in saying...
Thank You John!
